FTP via Browser

This section describes how to transfer files to and from your UAH webpages , unix and mis student accounts using the FTP tools in a browser, i.e. Internet Explorer. To upload files to a web server, you must first establish an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) connection with that server. You initiate an FTP connection by typing the address (as described below) in the Address field of your browser's window.

Note that you must use an ftp:// prefix instead of an http:// prefix.

Making an FTP Connection

  1. Open your web browser, i.e. Internet Explorer
  2. In the Address field, type ftp://userid@some_host_name/

    For the webpages server
Replace userid with your UAH email username (also your WebCT ID) and some_host_name with the server's domain address; in this CBAe webpages.uah.edu .
Note: ONLY for the webpages server
The url entered in the Address field for the webpages server should include the path to the public_html folder located on the server. All files related to your webpage(s) should be transferred into this folder. For example, John Doe would enter the following url in the Address field:  ftp://doej@webpages.uah.edu/public_html

    For the unix (aslnx1) server
Replace userid with your unixNNN username and some_host_name with aslnx1.uah.edu . See image on left.
Note: Only in your unix account

The url entered in the Address field for the unix (aslnx1) server should include the path to the WWW folder located on the server. All files related to your webpage(s) should be transferred into this folder. For example, John Doe would enter the following url in the Address field:  ftp://unixNNN@aslnx1.uah.edu/WWW

    For the mis server
Replace userid with your winNNN username and some_host_name with mis.uah.edu . See image on left.

Visit the student accounts page for more information on your userids and passwords for different UAH accounts including the webpages, WebCT, unix, mis, and webmail servers.

  3. A password prompt opens such as the one in the image below. For the webpages server enter your UAH email password in the Password field. Unless you've changed it your password is the initial of your first name, initial of your last name, and last four digits of your social security number (the letters are all lowerCBAe). For example, John Doe's SSN is 555-55-5555. His UAH email password would be jd5555. For the unix (aslnx1) and mis servers your password is the last four digits of your social security number and the last three digits in your userid. For example, if John Doe's unix userid is unix000 and his mis userid is win000, his password would be 5555000 on both servers. Note: Do not check the Login Anonymously or Save Password boxes.
  4. Click the Login button. You are now connected to the server and can copy files and/or folders from your disk or hard drive to your personal web space. The open window connection should look like this:

    webpages server connection

    webpages server connection

    unix (aslnx1) server connection

    unix (aslnx1) server connection

    mis server connection

  5. Open the disk where the files/folders to transfer are located.
  6. Click the file or folder and drag it into the Internet Explorer window. To transfer multiple files at a time hold down Ctrl key, select all the files/folders you wish to transfer and drag the whole bunch into the browser window. Both Netscape (Mozilla) and Internet Explorer support drag-and-drop file downloads.

The file upload should now be complete and your files should be visible in the web server's directory structure. Close your FTP connection by closing the browser window.

You may also use an FTP client software such as WS_Ftp LE to transfer files to the server. See WS_Ftp LE tutorial.
